With so much cloud talk out there, we’re all beginning to sound like meteorologists. Nevertheless, it is vitally important to stay on top of the cloud—so to speak—and to be sure your tech partners do too.

At OST, we’ve noticed that while Enterprise (aka computer-using) customers are certainly considering the ever-mounting array of cloud offerings, they’ve been slow to move their application workloads to the cloud.

One of the primary barriers to Enterprise cloud computing is that most cloud environments were designed to run applications built for the cloud. The valuable illustrations of this aspect are SaaS offerings such as SalesForce.com and Office365. Makes sense. Because of this, however, many earthbound Enterprise applications often require a cloud computing architecture re-design of homegrown or off-the-shelf programs before heading for the sky. In addition, the long-term cost of cloud environments isn’t well understood. And finding the right talent can be a bit challenging…not to mention expensive.

Caution aside though, in many Enterprise organizations, Line of Business units aren’t sitting still. They’re going around IT and purchasing public cloud services directly. Think of them as the teenagers in this scenario. These business units are all about the NOW. They crave speed, dexterity, and the ability to innovate—and often don’t believe IT (aka: Dad) can respond effectively. IT, on the other hand, is focused on maintaining a reliable, secure infrastructure—and they are losing control of their corporate data.  Our IT Dad must do something. Enter OST.

The Opportunity

Did you ever play the cloud game where you spot different things in those big white puffs? “I see a horse.” “I see a sailboat.” These days, you might hear companies exclaiming “I see backup and disaster recovery!” In fact, there are a whole host of workloads that are perfect for the cloud. Backup & Disaster Recovery, Test & Development, Email & Collaboration, Web & E-commerce are just a few examples. Some advantages of cloud computing include new cloud offerings that can move an Enterprise data center seamlessly into a private or public cloud—allowing IT (Dad) to maintain control using existing policies while Line of Business units (our teenagers) achieve the agility they demand. These new cloud offerings are ideal for the virtualized applications that exist in most Enterprises, as well as new apps that need access to existing legacy content. Here, Enterprises expand into private or public clouds as needed—using the same skills and management tools for both on- and off-premise workloads.

Of course, like so many things in life, a successful IT initiative starts with a solid plan, data and analysis. There’s just no substitute for doing your homework. Whether your organization is new to cloud services or you simply want to expand your cloud use, a targeted study of your IT environment and business needs is crucial in order to provide a clear picture of the return on investment—enabling you to justify the move with detailed benefits for your company and stakeholders.
