FTC&H is a 320 person firm that provides a full range of civil engineering, environmental, architectural/engineering, and construction management and related services to both public and private clients.
FTC&H initially contacted OST to upgrade their custom SharePoint-based proposal system from SharePoint 2007 to 2010. This system was a highly customize instance of SharePoint 2007. Due to the customizations made to their SharePoint 2007 system upgrades, support and adding new features became very expensive and time consuming.
OST made a recommendation to simplify the architecture of this solution. We recommended to use SharePoint’s document management, metadata system and searching functionality but to remove the need to create new team sites for every proposal.
We architected a separate web application with its own database which simplified the creation & management of proposals. The system integrated with SharePoint but didn’t depend on it to manage a large number of team sites across many site catalogs. It simplified the usage of SharePoint to simple document libraries and a few custom lists. By moving the team site concept to a custom application we were able to deliver the end users a similar yet more targeted user experience. The new archtiecture makes it simple to add new features for the end users without having to deploy those changes to thousands of team sites. It also made the future SharePoint upgrade process simple.
FTC&H will save a significant amount of money when they want to upgrade. The end users of the system are more productive and maintenance work on the system is much easier and less time consuming. Ultimately, FTC&H can be more productive when delivering proposals to thier customers.
