The (Fully Functional) OST Family

We feel more like a family than a corporation.

At Open Systems Technologies, we feel more like a family than a corporation. We don’t blow out candles stuck in cupcakes on our birthdays, but maybe we should start. We’re all on the same page. We know each other’s strengths and weaknesses, we know how to work together. We believe our customers have a sixth sense for consistency and stability. We think big, aim high, shoot for the stars, go for the gold…you get the idea. Since we focus on complex environments, we only hire technical people with senior level skills. Brainiacs. Ubergeeks. Technical All-Stars, if you will. We’re confident you’ll be impressed with our line-up. We sure are.

Andy Van Solkema

Chief Designer

Functional design systems, and visual storytelling have long been a passion for Andy Van Solkema. From boyhood days of designing a neighborhood baseball league complete with team logos to designing for local, regional, and national companies, his passion has grown and evolved to leading a 12 person studio that is using design for unique outcomes that span stories, systems, processes and experiences.

Andy is a graduate of Grand Valley State University with BFA in Graphic Design and a Master’s of Design from Kendall College of Art and Design. Following graduation, Andy worked as a design consultant in the printing industry, graphic designer and art director in brand communications, and as an interaction design director. He enjoyed the variety of experiences, but ultimately something was missing.

In 2004, he started his own design studio, Visualhero Design. Initially working as a one-person shop in a home office, Andy grew the business in a slow, steady and smart way through the down economy. To differentiate themselves and to offer the most to their clients, in 2006 Andy and his team formally adopted user-center design principles with a research and systems approach to creative problem solving. In 2016, Visualhero was acquired by OST where Andy now serves as Chief Designer.  His team focuses on form, function, and meaning. The scope of work has grown to include graphic recording, data visualization, brand identity, interface design, information architecture, user experience and customer experience. They design brand communication, applications, websites, and business systems and processes that aren’t just easy on the eyes.  More importantly, they are designed for the user today and tomorrow.

Van Solkema has combined a systems and process mind with craft of design and creativity. He spends his time as an advocate for design, creative lead for the team, and managing design vision for OST / Visualhero Design. Although most days are spent directing design, running the business or meeting with clients, he enjoys using his experience helping GVSU Design Thinking Initiative and various nonprofit organizations. He also enjoys leading design workshops at his alma mater and other design education opportunities.

Andy has been published in design books and publications and received accolades and awards for branding and design. Design has changed and although he is firmly rooted in West Michigan, the clientele has grown to include Amazon, Nest, Apple, Chamberlain, Capitol Studios, GM and a host of local, regional and national corporate clients, a handful of local and Bay Area startups. Well beyond what Andy could have ever imagined back in 2004.

Van Solkema resides in Byron Center with his wife Tracy and two children, where he takes inspiration and solace from a balance of urban and rural and is empowered by his staff and people who entrust him with their design problems.

Tom Waknitz

Director, Minneapolis

Tom started his career as a mechanical design engineer and soon after came along this thing called a personal computer and computer aided drafting (CAD) & he was hooked. It was the first great experience working with business teams to achieve results. Much later Tom read the book, Get Out of I. T.

James VanderMey

Chief Innovation Officer

Jim VanderMey is the Chief Innovation Officer for OST. Jim has provided the technical leadership and product strategic planning for the organization since the very beginning. Jim is a technology visionary who sets the long and short-term direction for OST. He specializes in seeing the “big picture” of technology, the computer industry, and the business objectives supported by IT. As OST has gained an international reputation, Jim has taught and spoken at conferences in Europe, Japan, and throughout North America.

Jim attended the Grand Rapids School of Bible and Music as a pastoral ministries major, and went on to manage significant scale applications and infrastructures in the healthcare, manufacturing, and insurance industries. He has served as a consultant to many large organizations such as Herman Miller, Boeing, Priority Health, Magna-Donnelly Corporation, Hewlett Packard, Amway, Meijer, Komatsu, Mercedes, Navistar (International Truck), Flextronics, the US Navy and many hospital systems including Spectrum Health, Bronson Hospital, and HealthEast.

Creating value by connecting the Data Center disciplines of the past to the Design-centric disciplines to help businesses leverage technology more effectively is a place of special focus for Jim in his recent engagements.

Jim has been heavily involved in OST’s healthcare initiatives where he has leveraged his decades of experience in healthcare, enterprise applications and systems architecture to design high performance infrastructures for the Epic EHR application and the client systems such as VDI for the access tier. He has also been directly engaged with the OST analytics team on assisting customers in the adoption of analytics to create substantial value and new revenue opportunities leveraging Big Data.  In this space the combination of architecture, data visualization and design can be used to develop important new actionable insights.

Jim sits on the advisory board for the computer science/IS departments of Calvin College and Grand Valley State University Computer Science.  He is an avid reader of all types of non-fiction and literature and most mornings can be found paddling a kayak, canoe or SUP before work.  On the weekends, family and serving with his wife Ann at their church is a major focus.

When a publicly-traded IT consulting firm known as Whittman-Hart approached Mike with an opportunity to start a branch office in Grand Rapids, Mike jumped at the chance. Mike started the Grand Rapids office of Whittman-Hart with zero clients and zero revenues. Within the first few years, he was responsible for increasing revenues to over $20 million. Ultimately, through merger, the company was renamed as marchFIRST. Mike left shortly thereafter to start his own IT Consulting and Software Development firm, named CBS Solutions, Inc. CBS started in 2001 and grew quickly with revenues exceeding $5 million annually. OST and CBS had great complementary businesses and in March of 2008, CBS Solutions, Inc merged with OST.
