Data Center Inventory Procurement Solution

The Challenege

Thomson Reuters had an eight-week procurement lead time for data center equipment (servers, storage, and network gear), from the time of capital approval to complete systems readiness (loaded and tested).  Three quarters of this lead time was consumed after receiving capital approval to having the systems racked, cabled, and ready for Thomson Reuters to configure and install software.  This long lead time delayed business initiatives that relied upon or required additional data center capability.  

The Solution

With OST’s cross-discipline capabilities, ingenuity and flexibility, solid balance sheet, and strong vendor relationships, OST was able to design and implement a new Just in Time Data Center Inventory Procurement Solution that reduced the procurement lead time down to 48 hours or less.  OST’s Application Development Practice developed a custom inventory management and end-to-end workflow system to manage the solution, with features including purchase order management, shipment tracking, shipment receiving, inventory management, and fulfillment order management and processing.  The system also offers role-based authorization, configurable master data, a comprehensive notification system, and a powerful reporting dashboard.  The solution architecture is flexible and scalable to meet the evolving and expanding needs of Thomson Reuters, well into the future.

As part of the solution, OST also used its Data Center Services expertise to create processes and automation to facilitate the build-out and configuration of the data center equipment itself. Additionally, OST dedicated a team of solution administrators and technicians to be embedded within the Thomson Reuters ecosystem in order to manage and deliver the solution on a daily basis.

Over time, OST’s partnership with Thomson Reuters has grown from supporting one data center in Eagan, Minnesota to three data centers, with planning underway to expand support to additional data centers.  OST has completely changed the way that Thomson Reuters manages, procures, and delivers hardware technology. OST is an integral part of TR’s Data Center operations.
